Adding keyless entry to a 9C1

I just bought a 2004 9C1 and would like to add a few amenities like keyless entry. I am going to be parting out my 2001 base model which is a heavily optioned car, everything works and it runs great but rust has encroached on some structurally critical areas. It has a low mile 3800, buckets, floor shift and console, fold down rear seat, automatic day/night mirror, OnStar, DIC, etc. Never understood they didn't just pop for an LS. Can I use the components from the '01 to add keyless entry to the 9C1?

I also have a 2003 3.4 base model with the same color interior that will be the recipient of many of the '01's pieces like the fold down rear seat and steering wheel with radio controls.

Here's my '01 about 5 years ago, doesn't look like this any more.....

EDIT: Just found a couple old posts on converting to floor shift, I'm moving the complete '01 interior to the 9C1!

You maybe able to use the Module. Have you looked that the 9C1 don't already have the Option? If you still have the List of RPO codes on your 9C1 I would look to see if it has the AU0 option.

The 00-01 computers are slightly different then the 02-05 years and somethings may or may not work right. I am not sure you would have a problem with the Keyless just something to keep in mind.

Most of the rest of the upgrades just note that you would need to pull the wiring from the car for DIC and things like that. It would be from the back window up to the DIC area that will need the extra. I am not sure Onstar would be happy doing a change over of that system if your thinking about moving that too. I would ask them before you install it.

About the Steering wheel. Again the computers are slightly different and not sure how it would react to the new system. For the radio controls to work I think you would need to change out the Clock spring as well. For that it almost sounds easier to replace the whole steering.

Sounds like something that I would do. The upgrades your talking about Maybe take some Pictures as you progress for others that maybe thinking of doing these kind of things... Maybe talk about some of the issues you ran into if you do.. Just an idea....

Keep us posted.

Thanks, have read elsewhere the steering wheel with radio controls is plug and play across all 6 years but if not I have the complete donor car so I can change columns if I have to. Not keeping the OnStar, never used it and it would require swapping the rear windows as the antenna is mounted in the rear glass, not worth the hassle.

I picked up 2 unlocked NOS CD/Cassette factory radios off Ebay from a place that was clearancing their older stuff, $42 each shipped. One for the '03 because the reset functions for my warning lights, headlight delay settings, etc. don't work and the other one because they were such a great deal and I knew I'd be buying another 7th Gen eventually. Got one a lot sooner than I thought LOL. The 9C1 will get everything from the '01 I can make work plus I have a factory remote CD changer out of a Cadillac I bought for the '01 and never got around to installing, my '01 has the harness for it as this was a dealer installed option although I've never seen or heard of an Impala that actually had one. These radios have the auxiliary function to control the add on changer, I also have an adapter harness that plugs into the same connector on the radio with an input jack so I can plug in an MP3 player, Smart phone, etc.. The factory amp and speakers will get replaced with aftermarket but I want the dash to look stock so no aftermarket head unit. I also have the necessary adapter harness to connect an aftermarket amp to the OEM head unit and was planning on pulling the seats and carpet for the sound equipment installation anyway so what's a few more pieces LOL?

While I have the headliner out I'm going to fill the holes in the roof from the light bar the proper way and repaint the roof. I'll also remove the spot light on the A-pillar, fill the holes and paint it at the same time. When I'm done there will be no outward signs this was ever a cop car.

I keep a journal on all my vehicles so I can keep track of what I did at what mileage and what fixes worked for what problem, stuff like that, I'll also take pictures as I go. I lucked out and got a car that was brought up from down South, no rust and no dents anywhere. Just a busted front bumper cover and a few extra holes from the police equipment. All easy fixes. The '03 has some rust so I'll drive it in the winter and keep the salt off this one.

Did some digging and if the harness leads are there in the 9C1 I can add Remote Keyless Entry by transferring the module from my '01 while I have the interior out but I will need to install a new BCM and add the option during the programming process. If I wasn't doing a complete interior swap I probably wouldn't mess with it though.

Since I have a driveway full of OBD2 GM cars I'm seriously considering buying myself a Tech II programmer. My buddy that has been doing the Tech II stuff for me said one of the other mechanics at the dealership bought one of those $300 clones about a year ago and it works just as well as their $4,000 dollar one, it just doesn't have the latest software updates past 2013. All my stuff is a few years older than that.

It also needs a new front bumper cover so I'm going to install an LS bumper with fog lamps, I'll use an aftermarket harness and since the 9C1 doesn't have Traction Control and I don't want it I'll rewire the Traction Control switch to control the fog lamps. My cousin has a sign shop and I'll have him make a label for the switch that says FOG LAMPS matching the factory font.

Missouri car, NO rust! Has a few "piercings" though. It's at the tranny shop right now getting a new pressure control solenoid. Here's a pic from the ad.
