turn the key - nothing happens ... wait 10 minutes, works?!?!

This has happened about 5 times in the past year. Basically, if we go somewhere like McDonalds or the mall or something, then come out and start it up, absolutely nothing will happen with the engine. All accessories work perfectly, but the engine just won't fire up...it won't even try. Then 10 minutes later, if you try it, it acts as if nothing were wrong. I think it may be a security issue or something, but can anyone please shed some light on this? We had to make a new key for it several months ago because my wife bent the key in the door of our house, but it isn't the kind of key that has the security chip.

Your not crazy.

This is a well known and common problem with 7th gen Impalas. I had a 03' that did the very same thing. Of course all the dealer did for me was change the battery, that wasn't it.
You are correct about it being a security thing; the engine immobilizer switch in the ignition housing (where you stick your key in) is a known sub-standard part. But Chevy won't do anything about it because there haven’t been any fatalities from it. Of course, if you can't start your car you can't get hurt.
I think it costs around $300 to have a new ignition put in but then again there's no guarantee it'll work, same bad part just new.

I am not familure of how to do this but if you can find someone whom is there is an alignment problem with the key switch. This problem will get worse. A friend of mine found a person whom knew what to do to realign the key to the control box and so far the no problems. It took the fellow about 10minutes to fix it.
