Hi,

First, I'm female so don't throw tomatoes please. I have a 2004 3.8 that needs a transmission. I can't afford to rebuild so am thinking about used, but hesitating because of the horrible reviews I've read on all Impala transmissions.

Will the 2004 Grand Prix transmission that my local salvage yard has available be the same transmission with the same issues?

It makes no sense to install another of the same transmission and have the same problems.

First, why does it need a transmission? If that was a mechanic's suggestion, did you get a second opinion?

Where did you hear horrible reviews on the Impala transmissions? The next generation transmission that was co-developed with F**d had wave plate issues, but in 2004 it was fairly solid. But to answer your question, the Grand Prix likely had the same 4T65-E transmission unless it was supercharged. If you are fearful of putting in a used transmission you should be looking for a low mileage 4T65-E HD (such as from a supercharged Grand Prix).

What 04pala said. With a good maintenance regimen, quality fluid and filter, a shift kit these transmissions aren't so bad. I had the mileage in my signature on the original trans when I traded my impala in and the trans was fine despite a few hiccups I remedied with an inexpensive fix.
