Well I finally took my Impala in for the recall. GM has sent me about 20 postcards to remind me. Here is what they did. They glued a cover ( 2 halves) over my existing key ( so bring all your keys with you when you go) and added another ring to the key. see pictures below.
In case you want to do the recall at home the part numbers are 23232599 and 23279477 the ring and the 2 halves. You can get them from your local GM dealer. GM does the recall for free and your car is then listed in their database which is good in case, I hope never, you are in an accident and the airbags do not deploy b/c the key rotated and shut off the engine your auto insurance may not pay if their is not an official listing...so why not let GM do the campaign recall. your choice
Very few keys actually get the cover, not to mention you need special 3M Scotch-Weld adhesive to cement the cover to the key. The cover is only needed if the inserts do not work. Most will get the inserts in the slots of the key to make it a small hole in the center of the key slot, the inserts use a loctite adhesive #426.
Since most people don't bring in both keys I got lots and lots and lots of inserts in my tool box and a few covers.
I had this done to my wife's 05 Impala and my 2003 Alero. Just a insert in the existing ring slot. Mine fell out which doesn't matter because I ended up replacing the lock cylinder and ignition switch so I no longer have a key with the recall done and GM won't do it again so screw it. Didn't work the first time anyway. My wife's insert is about ready to come apart as well. It's a shit recall
Pretty much. But it doesn't matter, it's a CYA recall anyways. The ignitions switches in these cars have not had a single report of unintended rotation. Just after the Cobalt debacle, GM really wanted to cover their ass, so they recalled pretty much every make and model for this "issue."
It is my understanding that only cars with the ignition cylinder in the dash was recalled. Steering column mounted cylinders aren't affected. It has to do with the key not being vertical when in the run position. So the key ring, with usually lots of other crap on it, is hanging at the bottom of the slot that is in the key. That places leverage on the low side of the key which could cause the key to rotate. So by placing the inserts in the key it places the ring in the center of the slot thus eliminating the leverage factor. No leverage no unintended rotation. Problem solved. Replacing the key cylinder without correcting the elongated slot in the key would not be an effective solution for the recall.
EDIT I guess GM could have, and maybe did, redesign the cylinder so that when in the run position the key would be in a vertical position.
Yeah that was my take on it as well after reading the Safety Bulleting about it. I don't get why the can't just rotate the ignition cylinder a little so in the run position the key is vertical or angled however its suppose to be... Lol
My impala doesn't have the issue with the ignition. However I am the 3rd owner so the previous owners might have done it already.
