best tires?

So I got a quote for new tires and it was around $800 for the 4 of them by a brand Ive never heard of or can even remember....is that too much or around normal cost? what would be my best bet as far as tires for my 96? Not racing, just reliable, long lasting tires. Sorry if this question has already been asked and answered.....

From the searching i've done it looks like Kumho's are a good tire with people reporting some real good mileage out of them. I'll be needing tires soon and that looks like it may be the tire I go with. I just bought my car last month and it has Primewell PZ900 tires on it and so far they seem like a decent tire as well.

being a new englander, well we get mother natures best at times :) do you get snow down your way? i heard to that kumhos are good too, i run fuzions, but they say its not a winter tire, she does go into hibernation for the winter anyway,
what ever u go with make sure the tire person uses a torque wrench, not the setting on the air gun or a torque stick etc..to tighten up the lug nuts, then u should recheck after 25-50 miles

My favorite tires I have ever ran were Falkens. I paid about $400 for the set, but that was on my '92 Civic, about 10 years ago. Also, I was in California with no rain what so ever for a few years. I currently am running some cheap Hankooks on my 15" Steelies. They actually have a quite a bit of grip and over all performance. On the twisties, I can hold 40 mph twisties at around 60-65 mph without any loss of grip. On the wet roads they do good too.

I assume you're referring to a stock rim size? I have Kuhmo Ecsta ASX's and they're not too bad. They are OK in snow and are good in rain. Not really a performance tire, as they have a 400 tread ware rating.

I have the BFGoodrich KDWS tires on my 96 Impala SS these were the replacement tires for The BFGoodrich Comp TA tires that the Impala's were shipped with new, in the Stock Size. P255/50ZR17

I have the Kuhmo ASX tires on my 95 Caprice SS Wagon.. On some pavements these tires can be noisy.. Also look at the Kuhmo SPT tires, they are a Ultra High Performance Summer tire.. They have a softer compound and have a UTQG of 320

The Kuhmo ASX has a UTQG of 420 and the BFGoodrich is a UTQG of 400

When I replace the tires on my Impala SS I will look at the Kuhmo SPT in a P285/40ZR17...
I have a few club members that run these all the way around on there Impala SS cars..

Here in the Chicago area we have a good relationship with the Discount Tire Stores they are great people to deal with.

Good Luck!

One other hot tip is to use the tape on wheel weights and not use the clip on wheel weights.. With today's Computer balance machines they work just as good.. Your Impala SS will look better and hopefully the wheels are not screwed up some one else..

Do you need to have the PCM reprogrammed or something changed to match the low profile side walls on the SPT's?

The 285/40-17 tires are 1 inch shorter than the 255/50-17 27.1 inch tire your speedometer will show faster than you are going.

Ok that's what I thought, i assume you can adjust that by taking out your dash and messing with the speedo

If you have a GPS you can have an idea of your speed is when you are showing 60 MPH. You may be going 55 when it shows 60.. A tuner can adjust your speedometer to correct for this.

A couple quick notes, about the torquing, yes using an actual torque wrench is best, but re-checking after 25-50 miles is only necessary with new wheels. New wheels will compress slightly where the lugs make contact, thus the need for re-torque, this is not an issue with new tires since the wheels are the same. About treadwear ratings, there is no industry standard on traction or treadwear ratings, they are all made up by the individual tire manufacturers, so using them as a comparison only works when comparing models from the same make.

could be a good time to check out the front end ,ball joints, tie rod ends idle arm etc prior to getting new tires, then you be all set for a front end alinement later
