Whats the difference between a Chevy small/big block?
Hi people!
I'm kinda having troubles with my engine. It is a stock LT1 in an '95 Impala SS. Last winter me and a friend ''rebuilted'' the engine but now i have a misfire on the 7th cylinder 'cause the sparkplug wire as melted on the headers 'cause ive put aftermarket ones and there too big... anyways now theres gas in my oil down the pan cause theres no fire, when the engines hot its knocking down the block... my friend told me its probably a loose connecting rod and theres an oil leak right underneath the damper pulley... its been almost a year i bought that car and i didn't even drove it around 'cause it is parked in front of my house and all i can do is looking at it... it costed me more than 2000 in parts (brand new piston rings, the cylinders have been drilled so they'Re straight, the valve seats have been refreshed, brand new crank and connecting rod bearings (all of them), new valves gaskets, the AC compressor have been removed for a damper, new exhausts check valves, new vaccum hoses, the planum cleaned, new gaskets form top to bottom, 8mm MSD sparkplug cables, new AC Delco sparkplugs, brand new waterpump, aftermarket Hookers Performance Headers, new starter, the exterior of the bloc has been painted orange and the valve covers are black so it looks clean and the inside of the engine has been cleaned twice so it's all new fresh oil in it...)Considering that... im feeling so confused and disapointed that i've checked on GM Performance Parts web site and an interesting engine could be the 454HO chevy big block that makes 500lbs of torque The question I was just asking myself tho was what is difference between a chevy big and small block? 'cause the LT1 is a 350 small block, could the 454big block fit in there...? could be a nice project! by the way if someone is interested for the engine... exept the minor problems described above, its like brand new... for parts or road, 438-880-4890

Depending on where you live and of course smog laws that go along with that it may be difficult to do an older series block with the current setup.
Maybe look into a LSX motor with a 480LE or an extremely built 460LE trans ? -Austin

Not the answer you want but if the fucked up a LT1 that badly no way in hell are you capable of a big block swap.
The big block swaps that have been done to street cars are none too impressive. For the effort you put into the LT1 you could have had the big block HP and 450+tq IF you had done anything right the first time. You will never get anywhere if you don't take the time and effort to identify your mistakes, learn from them and work through them. Again I know this is not the answer you wanted, you are probably all pissed off and wont listen, but this is the BEST answer anyone here can give you.

If your mechanical skill's are no better than your engrish skill's, and by the sounds of what is wrong with your LT1 then your next mod should be ...weld the hood shut.

Why would he do something like that when he just rebuilted the engine?

If you know what you are doing you can easily have more than 450hp and say 430tq at the flywheel from a stock shortblock LT1, more than that is definetely possible but I am lowballing to give an easily reachable goal. Nice thing about the LT1 is it fits perfectly, drives wonderfully and even at this power level will maintain a suprprising level of fuel economy. On the big block swap, seen a few examples of "professionals" not being able to really get it right even.

Thanks Guys! okay first of all it is pretty normal that you guys think of me that im an idiot 'cause i did mistakes... im actually getting out of school and a good mechanic have MANY years of experience, which i dont have... There is one thing i can say: that was my first time i was stripping a block appart and ys i did mistake, but i learned so much... a lot more than at school... so if i had to do it again, i would be better for sure! cause i know what i di wrong....
About the 454 Swap, i just wanted to have opinions but i agree that LT1 are real good engines, some say one of the bests GM have produced for a production car... It is just the fact that I WONT GIVE UP WITH MY CAR... i have so much people that told me to sell that piece of shit cause i aint good for nothing, but i wont, ill spend 10 000bucks if i can but I WANT MY CAR TO RUN LIKE NEW OKAY?? so if you guys say that an LT1 have the potential to get enough power for the streets, thats fine with me... it is true tho that because it is full injection it is more economical than a carberetor big block engine! Im not gonna give up on this engine and i did mistakes like everybody else... i just wanted to have my car back on the streets and i wanted to take the simpliest option... ill just stick with my LT1... by the way theres no doubts that will all theses new parts the engine is developping a bit more... but i dont know how much cause i didnt get the chance to put it on a dyno...
