white smoke out of exhaust- 1985 caprice classic
White smoke from the exhaust when I start the car. It starts right up and runs good. Seems to go away when I start to drive around. Any ideas?

Bit of oil seeping into a cylinder is my guess

That would be blue smoke, no? I think white smoke is anti-freeze....

If there is coolant disappearing and perhaps some overheating I agree, but the "blue" is a fairly light blue. Smell will tell you straight away

I have a 94 chevy truck that does that same thing. It is kind of like the condensation most cars put out on cold mornings until they warm up, yes? Are you losing any coolant at all? Take your hand and put it in front of the tail pipe to collect whatever is coming out, and wait long enough for some droplets to form on your hand. Coolant in the exhaust will have a smell. Water in the form of fog will not. If whatever forms on your hand has no smell, I would actually sample a little bit of it to see if it has any taste. I should taste like water.

As Papa D said , oil is seeping into a cylinder or three as the car sits , when you start it up the oil burns , hence the smoke which only lasts for a few seconds and stops.

There really is no need to have someone look at it, its valve seals. It won't hurt anything, but your plugs won't last as long, and you'll need to top off the oil a little more often. Or, you can replace them as shown in the video.

Yes. Valve Seals. If the smoke is kinda blue, then stops. Had that happen to my 85 Monte. Did those myself, but it took me a while...

I did 'em in my '73 454. Need to do 'em in the Caprice too; just don't have access to an air compressor.

If you set each cylinder to top dead center before removing the keepers, the valve won't be able to drop. It takes longer, but it works. Just take out the plug, stick a long screwdriver in the hole, and turn till it stops moving up.
