91 caprice blowing up mufflers

Remove this ad!
hi,

i've got a 91 caprice with a 5.0 and cat delete. first i shredded the original muffler (which had a crack or two) with a backfire then a brand new muffler with the loudest backfire i've ever heard. any suggestions? maybe a faulty muffler? it broke the seam on the muffler right where it latches from the straight pipe coming back. seems to only happen when it gets really hot which is inevitable here in Florida.

safe rides,
turk

the muffler was brand new... not sure why it's backfiring... something's interrupting the ignition i guess. backfired again today with the straight pipe, no muffler so i've got some kind of ignition problem i guess

Probably has to do with timing, or ignition, or combustion, or spark, or how about take it somewhere to have it checked before you do any unnesessary damage to your caprice.

Did you delete some sensors, i.e. the O2 sensors for example? If so the car may be running very rich and that could contribute to the backfiring. I'm all for removing all the emissions on these cars (and changing them to LPG) but the system they made is designed to work as a unit, and I wouldn't remove just part of it and expect the rest to work normally.

If you do remove part of it, I'd figure out the reststance values of the sensors that were there and put some resistors there to act like dummy sensors. That might work.

There is only 1 O2 sensor on a 91 & 92 caprice its on the drivers side. They are easy to change. The connector may be green with corrosion and that would cause the the computer to make the car run rich. Also hows the clutch fan is it working? That may cause the car to run hot also. There is also a coolant temperature sensor. You don't say how many miles are on the caprice, and if you have done a recent tune up. I would start with a cap, rotor plugs, and new thermostat. You may want to do a coolant flush also. As far as a muffler you may want to try a Glasspack, I have never blown one apart.

Good Luck
