Probably piston slap, which may be an annoyance, but will never cause problems no matter how long you drive the car. Piston slap is a tinny sound similar to pinging in an auto engine. If it's a deeper sound, it could be rod or crank bearings, which could be a problem, but I think it's piston slap.

I agree with Gregg O, what motor are you dealing with and what kind and type of oil do you currently use? ed

The type of oil used will have some, but not significant, effect on bearing noise or lifter noise in an engine. The noise is sometimes reduced, but not eliminated.

The Olds V8 engines from '49 through the mid 50's all developed hydraulic lifter noise by about 20,000 miles. Cadillacs and other V8's using hydraulic lifters during this period weren't nearly as prone to this problem. Oil available then would not keep sludge and varnish off the lifters. Sometimes, adding Rislone, Motor Medic, or another additive would quiet them temporarily, but The noise always came back. I rebuilt a '55 Olds 324 V8 in 1958 with new rings, bearings, and lifters. It ran quietly for about 6,000 miles and the lifter noise came back.

With today's engine oils, whether you change oil at 3,000 miles or 10,000 miles, engine noises are engine problems, not oil problems. Money spent on additives is money down the drain.

Piston slap is caused by loose fitting pistons in the cylinder bore. Pistons are oval, not round in the skirt area. The skirt diameter is only a few thousanths of an inch smaller than the bore. When the skirt gets worn or breaks off, the piston wobbles in the bore and makes a slapping noise. Piston slap usually gets quieter as the engine warms up unless there is a broken skirt or skirts, which allow the piston to flop around quite a lot.

Considering the fact that you are running a Gen 1 SB, either fix your timing, or you are running too much compression, pour a can of octane boost in it a see if that helps, 93 might not be high enough. You have taken the computer controls away from the engine so now you have to deal with the reason the factory went to computer controls...over-all drivability!!! So going backwards with your transplant hasn't really gained you anything.
