2001 Lumina Engine swap to Impala 3.5

Hi everyone, I have a 2001 Chevy Lumina with a blown motor. I was looking to replace the engine with the same 3100 but the newer 3.5 LX9, LZ4, or LZE engines looked more appealing with their improvements. I'm pretty sure they have the same FWD bellhousing pattern but was wondering if the newer engine would be incompatible for any reason? Thanks for the help!

Nope. The 97 model was produced until 2001 with an improved engine beginning in 2000.

Not sure on your question. The engine may very well fit your car but the current computer cannot run the new motor. If you find it will fit you will need to pull the computer as well. And since the new one also runs the transmission you may need to replace both. If you try to maintain the curre.t computer setup you have you will need to change out the injectors to ones that will give just a bit more fuel and you may have to modify the wiring harness to fit the new engines sensor locations. Please let us know if you decide to do this and how it turns out.

Wish you the best on this project.

It's worse than that, among other things, the 3.5 uses VVT, an electronically controlled camshaft. If you swapped the entire engine and transmission, wiring harness, and computer... Maybe it might work, but there will be more road blocks.

This does sound like a good setup but I probably wouldn't have the money to do it all at once and this is my only car right now so I'll probably end up just replacing it with the same 3100

Talking

I would do the 3.8 since they did use that engine in the monte ss in 99 and regal.

As I remember though, with the LTZ and the 3.8 you have to loosen the motor mounts just to change the plugs on the firewall side....blehhh....

So the 3.4 and 3.8 would drop in without any extra parts needed?

make sure you don't get a drive by wire engine plus I would get the PCM that came with engine if possible.
