4t65e swaps?
My transmission is on its way out and no one has anything good to say about these transmissions.
Is there another option to use when replacing? A different Chevy transmission that essentially mounts right up, or does with with little work? I have a 2004 3.4 impala. Thanks again guys! |

So exactly what is yours doing? I find that a lot of times, when things go bad on cars like a transmission for example, its usually because of unknowingly neglect. Not saying anything bad to you. Outside of that, whats up with it?

When shifting from any gear that does not use the forward clutch pack into one that does and then accelerate the car jitters forward. It slips and catches and will do this for a couple seconds. The only way I avoid this is by switching into drive and waiting 3 seconds or so for the pack to fully engage and then it's fine UNTIL it switches gears and then it's a noticeable clunk, whether up a gear or down. To top it all off the tranny fluid is now nearly black.
I drove this tranny hard for almost 100k by going WOT to hard breaking for its entire life. I used to peel my tires at every stop and ALWAYS spun tires in the snow, at times having the speedo at about 120kph while barely moving. I know I drive like a fucking retard so we don't need to go there ;) |

Your honesty is refreshing. And I would have to say that if you got 100K out of tranny number 1 abusing it, I would probably just replace it with the same thing - if it were me.

Don't confuse him! That model of trans is really your only option unless you want to pay massive amounts of money in fabrication costs, for something that still has never even been done. Best bet, is to get one built by someone who knows what they are doing, like triple edge performance.

Thanks king, that's what I was looking for. I have a junkyard close with a few impalas of my gen. I called today and they sell them or $175 a piece but I have to remove them. No guarantee etc etc.

Yeah, we have some of those yards too, but there are also yards that do the pulling, and assess the condition, plus provide a 30 day warranty. Any of the LKQ yards are that way, they are all over the country, you may want to check them out. But, they are more expensive, I usually get transmissions from them for about $875.

A 4t80e from a northstar powered H-body will bolt up, and those are BEASTS, but will require modification. Search the Grand Prix forums for that.
Your other option is a Getrag 284 5 speed (check the link in my sig) or an F23 6 speed from a Pontiac G6 (there's a write up on ClupGP). Both of those options require extensive modification, and I've never heard of someone doing it with a 3400, although I would imagine its possible. Honestly, unless you want to get into something custom, stick with the 4t65e and get it rebuilt by Triple Edge Performance. |
