Rattle noise!?

So I've been hearing this loud rattling noise only when I create a lot of psi. It's very load but like I said you only hear it if I put the gas pedal to the floor. It's a loud rattling/clinking noise. Any idea what it could be?

Sounds like you may be describing ping, or pr-detonation. What octane fuel are you using?

I was using 93 for a long time but got too expensive so I went to 89

When it is time to fill up next, go back to 91 or 93 just for one yank, ir buy a bottle of octane booster. You will find that filling up with 93 octane is cheaper than buying a bottle of octane booster every tank. But if the higher octane fixes the problem, there you go. To fix the detonation, I would try seafoaming your engine, and a general tune-up if one is due. But for that supercharged engine, 89 octane is probably just too low. The owners manual and the gas cap should both say the required octane.

Actually, I will save you the trouble of hunting down the required octane. Here it is:

2004 Chevrolet Impala - Specs

You need 92 octane. That three octane difference is a lot for the knock sensors to overcome. And on a supercharged engine, using a lower octane can really create a loss in power and fuel economy. So it may even be more economical to use 93 octane. Side note, have you noticed poor gas mileage lately as well?

I just wanted to chime in to say that I am in agreement with C.E. Divine's octane comments! I checked my GM resources for you and found that you are indeed supposed to only use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane of 91 or higher for 3800 Supercharged V6 engines. In an emergency, you may be able to use a lower octane as low as 87 if heavy knocking does not occur. Since knocking did occur when you went with lower octane, please let us know what happens when you fill up next with the higher octane. If the heavy knocking continues with 91 octane or higher fuel, your engine may need service. (See the "Gasoline Octane" section of your owner's manual on page 5-4 for details!)
