fuel tank sending unit may be in my future

I got my 96 SS from a widow whos husband had passed 5 years ago and the car has been sitting for just as long. It would crank but not start. A freind put his tech machine on the car and could not trigger the fuel pump so I new what I had to do... or did I? The fuel gauge hovers around 3/4 full with the engine running and sways from 1/4 to 3/4 when driving, especially around turns. Sounds like I need a fuel sending unit. Dough!!! I just had the tank off too!%#*&%!!!

Try running a couple of bottles of Techron through it, see what that does.

Thanks for the tip. I had recently talked to a vehicle technician and had asked him this. The car has been setting for many years, I put a new fuel pump in the tank only to realize that the sending unit was not working. I could imagine the sending unit stuck in a certain position but if I drove the car for a while, couldn't brake free from vibration, bumps and jolts? He smiled and said that would not happen. I like your idea from a cost stand point and if it doesn't work then I will have to put a sending unit in it. How many miles of driving do you think I should give it to brake lose before I buy a sending unit?

first of all how much is a sending unit (ive replaced 3 pumps no sending units) and also if u do it yourself u dont pay for labor ( takes maybe 2 hours w/ 1 person ) its seriously like 3 bolts.... but id give it a couple of tanks of gas?... i think it could happen

I am definitely going to give it some time before I replace the sending unit. I took the SS out yesterday (Thanksgiving day), put 3.5 gallons of Mobile 93 octain in and put a few miles on it. When I had the new fuel pump put in, the technician only put a few gallons of gas back in the tank. So before yesterday, it hardly had any fuel in it. When I brought the car back home from the fuel pump install, the fuel gauge was showing about 3/4 of a tank. Yesterday after I put gas in it, it was just below half a tank. I do not drive the car very much but I will try the Techron and after that maybe some Marvel Mystery oil in the tank. I know that stuff is a good lubricant. I think that sucker is gonna start working. Wish me luck !

Well good luck and I hope it starts working for you. Just be prepared to change it out. If you change it get a quality one. With my son's 94 Fleetwood we bought one from Autozone and it failed 2 months later, so I bought one from RMSauto.com. It cost more but well worth it.
