I have this cheap mechanics stethoscope I got from J. C. Whitnutz© years ago, but if you don't have one you can just use a short (maybe 2' or so) length of auto heater hose, the stuff that's say 5/8" I.D., and hold one end to your ear and put the other to the engine and you'll be surprised how well it works.
My wife's '92 Caprice had a grinding sound and when I put my stethoscope against the water pump it was real clear it was the source. When I took off the water pump it was obviously worn. I'd put it against the water pump, alternator... anything you can think of and see if that works. It helps to put an earplug in your other ear and be real careful around the fan and belts - no baggy clothes, you know the routine. |
