reverse tap for back up camera

IS there a place to tap into the reverse signal up front? I have a 2007 impala with the console shifter. I don't feel like running the wire all the way to back

What are you connecting the backup camera to? If you are connecting it to a head-unit, they usually automatically "detect" when in reverse. Usually, the power wire just goes from the camera to the reverse-light wiring and the video signal cable goes from the backup camera up to the headunit - so you'll need to run a wire the length of the car anyway - but not the power wire - that just goes from the camera to the reverse lights...

The camera is being connected to my Pioneer AVH-x2700BS touchscreen head unit. I know ill have to run the A/V yellow camera wire; I just do not want to use a ton of other wire from the purple reverse-sensing wire coming out of the head unit to go all the way back to the tail light so it can detect when I am in reverse. I was hoping there was a wire or something.. literally anything.. that was up under the dash that I could tap into that gets powered on when the car is shifted into reverse.

The ground coming from the camera is being grounded to the frame. The power I plan to run off of my amp.

Hmm - honestly, I've only connected backup cameras to the Rosen units - with those, you simply run the video wire and the power wire doesn't need to go all of the way from the camera to the headunit - you can use anything as a power source for the camera, which is why people use the reverse-light power wires to power the camera - that way it's only powered when in reverse and you only have to run wiring from the camera to the reverse lights.

I thought that all cameras were like that. Not sure I understand why you'd need to run the camera power wires all of the way to the head-unit for power...

Its not that I'm running wire to the head unit for power, Im running wire from the reverse-wire coming out of head unit to the tail light so it can sense I'm in reverse. Im hooking up my power for the camera to my amp in the trunk.

Ah, OK - my bad - I misunderstood. Sorry, I can't help much here then - like I said, I've only done this on the Rosen plug-and-play units and I didn't have to do any of that. They automatically detect when the car is in reverse (via the CANBUS signal, I believe).

Sorry for wasting your time. :)

haha thanks for trying! you couldn't possibly know why the little LED lights on the camera itself are always on... would you? :bang:

This camera is beginning to become a PITA

If the little LED lights are always on,, that means that the camera is being powered all of the time. That is why most people connect the power wires to the reverse lights - because the reverse light wiring is only "hot" when the car is actually in reverse, so the camera would only be powered while in reverse.

If you are powering the camera via your amp, then it's going to be on as long as your amp is on, which is not good (it will probably go bad much sooner).
