Isn't the 3.5 sideways like the V8 is? They could be right. Maybe video tape it. That is also where the accessory belt parts are.

6 3.5's, all over 150k miles, never heard any knocking. I would say not normal.

Welcome, Leonb! As you've seen (above), this Impala forum has a lot of knowledgeable members who give helpful feedback. I'm also available anytime via private message if you have vehicle questions or concerns you'd like me to investigate on your behalf (for example: vehicle build, warranty info, dealer info, etc.).

If the knocking continues, I suggest you take your car back to the dealer for more service. If you'd rather visit another dealership, please let me know and I'd be happy to find alternatives for you.

Best,

Katie

Try running a tank of 93 Octane. After i found out that the SS need 91 or higher, i start to use it and found out i didnt here the knocking. I use to get it when it was cold or after a hard drive.

Did they find a solution to you problem because I'm having the same problem but my 2011 impala has 27500 miles the Chevy techs said it was normal too and I disagree they call GM engineers they said that the noise is coming from my heat shields but it can't be because my car has been running for 30 min non stop any suggestions

Just for grins and giggles if you have access to a diagnostic stethoscope ( you can get them cheap at auto supply places ) next time you hear the noise try listening to the purge valve under the hood. It's friggen NOISY and that is where I found the "Knocking Noise" on mine. It's intermittent and I did manage to mitigate it greatly with a rubber grommet and about 15 minutes of fiddling. Apparently they are just noisy and I thought for a long time it was a bottom end noise, or stuck lifter or loose torque converter but that is what I found.
Put the probe on the valve and have a listen. THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

Just eliminate it as NOT the issue, but, they are friggen NOISY for sure.
