2002 3.8 upgrades
My wife's 2002 Impala with 3.8 l engine has about 80,000 miles on it with nothing done so far. My only complaint is that the mileage has dropped from 30-32 when new to 26-28 now. Plugs are original as are the wires. I suppose they're due to be changed. It runs on Mobil 1 oil. My wife is not a big fan of noise so loud exhaust systems are out. I'd like a little more power but mainly I'd like the gas mileage back. Someone told me that Bosch makes some performance injectors but I can't find them. Any advice?
Also, the brakes are due to be replaced. The current ones have been in since 30,000 when the OEM's gave out. Normally I'd just go with NAPA's best replacement parts. Again, Any advice? Many thanks. |

Do a tune-up with factory spec parts, stick with delco plugs. Replace the fuel filter. Replacement injectors won't help, and are generally a bad idea until you do something to make a LOT more power. An overkill PCM tune will wake things up and give it a little more pep, could help city mileage a little, probably won't affect highway much.
Brakes, NAPA's finest will work nicely, the 7th gen impalas are pretty good on brakes, you can use pretty much whatever. __________________ 1978 Caprice Classic Landau 350 2-bolt, stock 4bbl Stock rebuilt TH350 Edelbrock performer cam + intake Dual 2 1/2" Flowmaster exhuast (waiting to be installed) Edelbrock IAS Classic shocks 95 9C1 3.08 posi 4 wheel disc brakes! 16x8 American Racing Baja's with 225/60/16 Pirelli P4's

as king stated, do a full tune up with delco parts.
If you want a little more power and make the car a little more fun to drive, as stated a tuned PCM will do the job and is not too expensive. I would also look into an intake (if you just want mileage, a warm air intake will help that (but hurt performance and increase knock). Also a performance downpipe (or at least a u bend delete) would be a good idea. It shouldn't be loud if you keep the cat back but will let the car exhale better. especially good idea if doing a tune |
