Bad Ignition Coil Packs & Tapping Sound?
Hey all, new here. My wife and I are considering the purchase of an 01 Impala LS that has the 3.8. Completely loaded out including leather & sunroof.
Our heartburn is this....the dealer (a Toyota dealer that has both new & used cars) has told us the car will need front brakes ($190) and new ignition packs ($220). They have the car priced at $3k, which appears to be a good price but the extra work concerns us. Brakes not so much, but the ignition packs.
Prior to test driving the car, I was listening to it run and it runs very rough as you can see the whole engine shake (seems consistent w/ bad ignition packs) but there is also a tapping sound. I'm not a mechanic, but would associate the noise to a lifter tapping.
I could be way off base here....can a bad ignition pack create a tapping sound? Perhaps my untrained ear was tricked.

Possible, but I'd check for other issues first. Take a look at the oil filler cap and the dipstick. If the oil is a chocolate milk color, then it's got a lower intake manifold leak and most likely that's what's causing the tap. I'd walk away at that point.
Coil packs are a snap to replace and can be purchased at your friendly neighborhood car parts place for roughly $40 to $50 a piece. That's a DYI.
Brakes, about $60 per rotor (do all 4) and ceramic pads are about $60 for all four corners. That's also a DYI.
If it's shaking noticeably, you most likely need upper engine mounts also. Regardless of what's causing the engine to shudder, it shouldn't shake bad enough to note it.
3K sounds like a good deal initially, but I'm guessing high mileage and it sounds like the car has taken some abuse. The fact that the dealership hasn't touched it tells me that they don't feel it's worth taking the extra effort to do the repairs, and more than likely there's more wrong with it than just those few things. I'd look elsewhere.
You can get a newer 04-05 base or ls model Impala under 100k miles for about $5-6000 that's in decent shape. I'd recommend going that route.
Have you checked your local auctions?
