Another perplexing "odd shifting" senario

So yesterday my wife is driving my 2000 Impala and she said it just lost power and died and didn't have enough batt to even turn over. got a jump and it was fine, but took it to the Zone to get charging system checked out. Alt was fine but said batt has a dead cell. I take a fairly new batt out of another of my cars and put it in the Impala and as always when I've disconnected the batt, the trans starts shifting real sluggish, like its slipping between gears. Had this happen a few times before but it always "relearned" the shift after some driving, however tonight while that was going on, 3 things happened that are different, 1. the check engine light came on, 2. at about that same time I noticed it started shifting real firm and fast, like it has a shift kit in it, 3. there is a whining or whirring sound coming from up front somewhere that's up & down with rpm, even in neutral. hadit scanned for codes and these are the 2 it showed P1811 and P0420, the latter one talking about a possible large vacuum leak. Are these transmissions controlled in anyway by vacuum? I thought that had gone out years ago. Anyway, can anyone lend their thoughts as to what may be going on here?
Thanks.
Ken.
