Well I rebuilt the top end on my 04 impala 3.8 non-SC and replaced the radiator due to a crack in it. When I replaced the radiator I was told the trans cooler was bad on the old one (tried to get the old repaired). Anyway I pulled the trans pan tonight and water had gotten into the transmission and it was frozen solid! I carefully chipped away at the ice the best I could and got the fluid to start draining out. My question is where to go from here? Its about 20*F outside hence the frozen water. Been a mechanic my entire life but not alot of experience with automatic transmissions, any help or input would be greatly appreciated.
Is the check engine lamp on or flashing when this is happening? My first thought would be damage from the water being in the tranny in the first place. But you say if you shut it off and restart it will work fine for a short bit. I am suspecting that you are losing third gear clutches. Remember any water in the automatic transmission is almost if not always a death sentence to the clutches.
Yes my CEL has been on since before, (Random multiple misfires, Im thinking my IAC, also need to clean my MAF) but a few hours before it started acting up the CEL started flashing on and off throughout the day. Starting to think Im just gonna have to suck it up and do a rebuild :bang:
When the cel starts flashing, count the number of times it flashes. That is the cylinder number that is misfiring. Could be a simple as a plug, wire, or possibly a coil if its multiple cylinders.
Im currently trying to find a way to get my car back to my house for repairs as its stuck in my girlfriends parents driveway... Ive checked the coils, they are all firing, wires and plugs are new but I should prob pull the plugs, check if they are fouled or anything. While im at it Ill hook up my spark checker and check all the wires out.
Ill have to count the number of times it flashes, thanks G25
