Looks like my Impala is dripping a bit of oil from the Trans Pan. Obviously I'm going to need to drop the pan and then reseal it.. Last time I did this I just tightened til snug. This time I'll employ a torque wrench and tighten it to factory spec..
On to the opinion portion:
Locktite on the bolts or no?
New pan or no? The reason I ask this is, I've read that over-torquing the bolts may lead to deformities in than pan not allowing a complete seal.
New bolts or no?
Lastly what has been your experience with the filters you guys have installed? The Wix filter I installed when I last dropped the pan has not led to a problem but it's a bit pricey. Not as pricey as the AC Delco filter. If there is a cheaper alternative with good reviews I may choose to go that route.
Lol I'd hate the wiring nightmare required for a remote start with the pass lock system.
A few times I let the car sit for a good 15min and it still happens. I have had this issue happen in 40deg if it sits for a few days. But really cold conditions obv have a greater effect. It has to be a sticking solenoid. Hence why I am going to run some sea foam and swap the fluid this coming summer. Hopefully the issue subsides.
This is my only concern with the car now. Dan near everything else has been done to the car. Besides control arm's (bushings) this car is brand new. Lol
Mine too.. Trans is the only thing used under the hood.. (Except jy maf.. Shh) car has 50k in it's current configuration.. With engine swap.. Suspension and sensor replacements... I might trade it in soon though
Be sure when you pick up the new magnet that their the circular style and not the square shape, you'll also want to pick up 2 of them for the TSB on your transmission.
Its TSB#08-07-30-040C
That TSB addresses the some of the harsh shifts the transmission is known for and is a cure for the slip off the line problem. they'll want you to put the first trans pan magnet on the pan were the last one was then put the other trans pan magnet on the filter its self, if you pull up the TSB they have pictures on were to place the second magnet.
When you get a replacement trans pan gasket be sure it has the metal sleeves for the bolts, if it doesn't then its a battle getting it to seal correctly. No lock tite is needed, its actually common seeing those trans pans missing a bolt or 2 and not leak at all. Then you'll want to torque down the bolts to 10 ft lbs of torque, be sure to do a few passes to make sure their all torqued down to spec and you'll be fine.
As promised.. My diagnosis of the returning leak from a reseal awhile ago.. Got under the car this weekend to find 2 bolts missing from the pan and a slight dent in the pan.. Bolts probably an oversight on my part. The dent however... Oh wife when you see a giant desert boulder drive around it.
I could have just replaced those bolts with, the leak being so minimal.. torqued them down and left it but, noooooo... I had already spent some money on the replacement dorman with a drain plug.. Drained everything out.. Put the new AC Delco gasket and Dorman in.. Filled her up with some Dexron IV.. Big mistake. I now had a severe leak from the corner nearest to the front of the car... I had to be losing a QT every 15 minutes with the car off. Yikes! So I went back under and got dirty. Went back over the bolts with my new torque wrench.. Everything was already at 10 ft. lbs of tq.. So I gave them a 1/8th CW turn. Nope, still leaking like crazy... Frustrated and running out of time I said fuck it.. Hopped in my trusty little bucket MX-3. I got to the dealer a few hours before they closed to find they had a replacement pan in stock.. I bought it.. On the way back, I cashed in 1 of 2 free tows per year from my insurance company and had it towed to a friend's shop with a lift so I get a better look.. Everything looked good. The pan just would not seal.. It didn't even look like a significant gap in the corner. All there was just the spew of red fluid like a bloody horror movie. I said fuck it again.. Took the pan down.. Drained out the remainder of my fluid watching my money swirl down the oil catch pan and put the dealer pan on.. No more leaks... Yesterday was so fun.
