2005 3.4l Impala - Transmission

I've gone through every thread in the 7th Gen Drive Train section with no luck.

my 2005 Base Impala 3.4l (68K miles) has ran flawlessly the past few months. On Sunday morning the car/trans seemed to slip a little from a stop making a left turn into traffic.

Ran fine the rest of the day although there was a slight 'clicking' sound coming from the front end someplace.

Fast forward to 7:30 PM that evening. At a red light, light turns green, I go and hear that awful sound of grinding metal from under the motor and the car coasts to a stop.

Engine runs fine. When you put the car in gear you hear grinding. Shift lever moves as it should, when in park the car still rolls. No codes on the dash.

It's at the shop now. Thoughts? Anyone had a similar experience?

I've seen common problems posted here like Electronic Pressure Solenoid, CV joint, intermediate steering shaft. Pump? Torque Converter? My gut tells me much worse by the sounds.

Ideas?

Thanks. :eek:k3:

Just found a link to TEP transmission site. Seems to be popular on the Impala forums. Looks like I have the 4T65E transmission?

No movement in any range:

This problem can have numorous causes and on higher powered cars typically a broken input shaft or drive chain set is suspect. Below is a short list of potential broken or failing parts to cause it.

-Broken input shaft
-Broken drive chain or sprockets
-Extremely low fluid level
-Broken ouput shaft
-Clogged filter from excessive debris in fluid
-Broken oil pump shaft
-Stripped torque converter splines
-Broken Input clutch drum shaft
-Broken axle or CV joint
-Badly damaged geartrain or differential

Outside of checking the fluid level and axles there is not much you can do short of removing the transmission for a teardown to inspect the parts.

You are correct on the transmission you have. TEP is a good company. If my trans goes out after powertrain warranty is up, I will be giving those guys a call. They have several levels of transmission build to handle stock, slightly modified, or a highly modified car, and prices to match each level. It sounds like you have broken something though. I think on our 8th gens, the output shaft likes to go out to to bad seals, causing a lack of lubrication. That would be my bet as to what ha happened to you, although I don't think problems are nearly as common on 7th gens. I bet there will be sizable chunks of metal in the fluid pan.

Actually, its not a lack of lubrication that becomes the issue, its that because the fluid leaks past the seals, the drive doesn't engage until more pressure is built up, so you get that sensation of it revving up before dumping into gear. Thats what breaks parts, which doesn't sound like this case, however, if there is grinding, there are definitely broken hard parts, no question. The leaking seal issue on the 8th gens is due to poor quality metals wearing too quickly, I can only assume that the 7th gens had better materials. In this case, I'm gonna guess that one of the planetaries came apart.

Alrighty, update time.

Sunday night, had the car towed to my friends shop anticipating he would do the work. Monday I realized I have a 3 month/3K Powertrain warranty from the dealer I bought the car from :)

Had it towed to the dealer Tuesday. This morning they approved the work and have ordered a GM Remanufactured trans. Still awaiting the warranty info for the new trans, might be 3 year/36K, not sure yet.

I am only 2 months into the car, but had only 13 miles left on the warranty

Yes. 13 miles. Should have it back early next week if all goes well

The GM rebuilt trannys always come with a 5yr/100k warranty, the only time I've seen it less is if either you get a GMPP unit, or have them rebuild it instead.

I think so, but I can't recall where. You can always ask the dealer.

You can try this GM Parts Direct: Your direct source for Genuine GM Parts I didn't read it, so I'm not totally sure it's the right link, but I know it was online somewhere.
Thanks. GMPD has a terrible pricing structure but good info right there :)

That says 24/24K. We'll see.

I have a call into Chevy Customer Service as well to see what they say it should have.

Car is already done, picking it up after work today
