2002 Impala, 3.4L engine mount, how to?

Hi,

My son's 2002 Impy needs an engine mount (ie, passenger side mount to frame, 3.4L). The factory manual says to remove the entire car and motor from the frame, then swap the mounts and put it back together.

Okay, I exaggerated a bit. But before I start building/renting "special engine support fixtures" and removing the "three-way catalytic converter pipe from the right rear exhaust manifold", I thought I'd ask here how others have done this.

Any chance I can just put a jack under the oil pan (with some lumber in the sandwich) and lift the motor up a bit without using a special support or removing the cat pipe? I'm okay with removing the engine strut mounts - that's easy enough - but getting a special fixture or removing exhaust stuff amounts to more that I'm up for.

Any advice or links to how-to write-ups is appreciated.

Doug
