Swapped trans, having more issues now

Hi guys, here is my story.

2002 3.4 Base. Been having the all too common 1-2 hard shifts after 20 or so minutes (sometimes more sometimes less). The trans starts whining loudly and then it starts shifting hard.

So this summer (I'm a college student) I decide to go ahead and replace all the solenoids as well as install a Transgo shift kit - $400 for labor. I also had the issue with the trans not staying in 4th gear, sometimes.
Mechanic opens it up and says a whole bunch of other things are wrong. Valve body plate checkball hole was eaten out too much, trans got overheated and messed up the frictions. Also the 4th gear shaft (not hardened) was completely shot. Options are to rebuild or get used trans. I was able to locate a used trans for $500 so I did that.

My pain should be over now, but it sadly just began. Mechanic tells me the shift switch is of the older model (1996 Lumina-2001 Impala) but he is able to change it to the newer one. He also installs the shift kit and solenoids.

I get the car back and notice hesitation around 35-40, later I noticed up 60 also. Once in a while a tiny jolt when cruising at 70. These problems, in addition to the SAME (louder!) whining and hard shifts from 1-2, except they now start as soon as I start driving. The car jolts when shifting into 1st gear also, and I have noticed some strange idling, and also unsure shifting/jumping between shifts/strange acceleration. I made 350+- mile trip this weekend.

I am now out of about $1200 on a college student budget, and the issue is worse than before.
Of note are: the solenoids were a cheap kit from eBay, the transmission is from an older pre 2001 vehicle.

I am begging for some hope

Did the used trans have any type of warranty (30 day or something)? If so, you might want to try to exchange it for another one... That's the problem with buying an older used transmission - you really have no idea what kind of shape it's in. In hindsight, you probably would have been much better off getting a rebuild (doesn't do you much good now though).

YOu're kind of SOL, I think (unless the used trans had a warranty - but even then you're still out all of the labor charges for installation, etc).

Maybe you can stop by a transmission shop to make sure that it's actually a transmission issue and not a TCM issue or something... Because it is kind of strange that you're have the exact same issue with a completely different trans.
