CAI homemade ram air attempt
Saw a similar build on the SS forum and thought i would give it a try. Not bad imho. Just needs to be painted and waiting on my mechanic to drill a hole in the fender well for me tomorrow. I thought about making the hole myself using a few sticks of dynomite, but i figured that would make the hole a little to damn big. LOL

You gonna put some kind of splash shield to keep the water and mud out of the filter?

Well sadly i have to say the install didnt get done. Me and the mechanic (that was going to drill the hole in the fender) talk about it today. It was just to much of a risk getting wet no matter what.

Supposedly (I just heard a second ago on fuckbook) that with this setup its drawing in hot air rather than cool. Im having a hard time believing this if Im driving and all that air hitting the intake, not to mention the fact that the fans are running a good portion of time. Anyone care to comment on this??? Thanks

The air that it will be drawing has to first pass through the radiator, which will heat it dramatically. If you look at any of the RAISS systems you will notice they fit over top of the radiator, that is one of the main reasons why. You can't get cool air in the engine compartment, but the further off to the side you get, the better. Essentially, the way you have it set up now is like placing it in front of a space heater.

I would personally just try to copy the RAISS design, some sheet metal, rivets to hold it together, and some rubber hose or something for a lip seal. That would be the best bet for getting fresh cool air, plus thats the only way you'll get the benefits of ram air.

Now, I dont wanna throw a wrench in the ram air thing, 'cause I love the concept... BUT I have read that the Ram Air does not actually work that well on our cars due to the way the air flows over our hood. I would love to be wrong about this one. Does anyone have any proof of concept on a B Body with Ram Air? Real data, not just "seat o' the pants" HP gains.

That would be very difficult data to get, since dynos are stationary. Even if the ram air part doesn't work all that well, it will still be a larger amount of significantly cooler air than stock, and probably than just a CAI by itself.

I'm gonna get me a RAISS... or build a clone myself, but I was just curious. If there was data, then I could justify the cost to my wife. Anywho... Kane, keep us posted on your build.
