Saw a similar build on the SS forum and thought i would give it a try. Not bad imho. Just needs to be painted and waiting on my mechanic to drill a hole in the fender well for me tomorrow. I thought about making the hole myself using a few sticks of dynomite, but i figured that would make the hole a little to damn big. LOL

You gonna put some kind of splash shield to keep the water and mud out of the filter?

#4 ·
Well then, good luck and post more pics when its done!

Well sadly i have to say the install didnt get done. Me and the mechanic (that was going to drill the hole in the fender) talk about it today. It was just to much of a risk getting wet no matter what.:sad2:

However, we did another mod that was just as effective, if not better:

Supposedly (I just heard a second ago on fuckbook) that with this setup its drawing in hot air rather than cool. Im having a hard time believing this if Im driving and all that air hitting the intake, not to mention the fact that the fans are running a good portion of time. Anyone care to comment on this??? Thanks

The air that it will be drawing has to first pass through the radiator, which will heat it dramatically. If you look at any of the RAISS systems you will notice they fit over top of the radiator, that is one of the main reasons why. You can't get cool air in the engine compartment, but the further off to the side you get, the better. Essentially, the way you have it set up now is like placing it in front of a space heater.

just keep trying new setups and possibilities and you will get one thats good. keep up the work!!

I would personally just try to copy the RAISS design, some sheet metal, rivets to hold it together, and some rubber hose or something for a lip seal. That would be the best bet for getting fresh cool air, plus thats the only way you'll get the benefits of ram air.

Now, I dont wanna throw a wrench in the ram air thing, 'cause I love the concept... BUT I have read that the Ram Air does not actually work that well on our cars due to the way the air flows over our hood. I would love to be wrong about this one. Does anyone have any proof of concept on a B Body with Ram Air? Real data, not just "seat o' the pants" HP gains.

#14 ·
That would be very difficult data to get, since dynos are stationary. Even if the ram air part doesn't work all that well, it will still be a larger amount of significantly cooler air than stock, and probably than just a CAI by itself.

#15 ·
I'm gonna get me a RAISS... or build a clone myself, but I was just curious. If there was data, then I could justify the cost to my wife. Anywho... Kane, keep us posted on your build.

(Sinister Laugh):

Ive Got it!!!!!

Cost??? About $10 bucks at Lowes. The mechanic and another guy on facebook got to arguing badly about the filter being in the front on the fans and so on.

So basically I went to Lowes and bought a aluminum tube and a adjustable aluminum elbow. Of which they both were for stove vents and dryer vents.

I turned the filter facing the headlight/ street so I still kinda get that ram air effect through the sides of the lights. The MAF is directly in front of the intake. We had a real bad storm today which cooled things down big time. So I took it out for a run and its by far the most effective difference than the original KN set up altogether.

As a DIY it would be pretty cheap, if you have some sheet metal tools, at least some snips, and a riveter, then the materials would be pretty cheap.

EDIT: this was in response to the previous post, Kane's post came while I was typing.

Kane, that spot is perfect. That should work nicely, but expect it to be loud, the thin metal pipe will resonate quite a bit. Should sound kinda cool as long as there are no rattles. Get the PCM done soon though, you are going to be flowing a lot more air and it will run funny till you do.

I just had the tune done about a week ago from pcmforless. Do I need it again?

If you had any kind of CAI installed at the time I wouldn't worry, but if you had a stock aircleaner than I'm afraid you probably will need to.

#21 ·
Ok So I should be good then. Because I had the KN fresh out the box before I got the tune done.

I find it interesting what guy's call ram-air...the pic that Cory posted above is about the only true ram-air made for these car's....if there is ANYTHING infront of the intake it is NOT ram- air, it may be a good cold-air intake but there is no direct ram effect if the air has to go around/over/through anything before it get's to the intake. Just how much air do you think get's around the headlight's..??? and once around them, where is it directed to?...

I attempted a RAISS style intake without the metal to get the cool air into the engine.. the times at the 1/8th mile were honestly a little more consistent, but not a whole lot better. I have now put on a custom Spectre intake, and my throttle response has increase a whole lot. Haven't been to the track yet tho. Anyways that was my experience.

Kane, Im really impressed by your effort to build a good, yet effective home made intake. I seen your newest intake in the IOTM thread, with that in mind i would try and do a shield with some weather seal kind of like the pic I posted which is my buddies 05 GTO. One thing I do not remember is how much clearance runs over the radiator cover, If there is a good amount of clearance that making a heat shield like this would be great. Actually now that I think of it and after i already wrote all of this and posted a picture, the RAISS setup has the heat shield I am talking about haha, but yeah make a shield and I think you will have your self a great intake. Keep up the good work!!!

EDIT here is what i was thinking of

Well thank you sir. I really appreciate that. Ive been sitting here since the build was made thinking how to make a homemade shield, that similar to the Raiss version. No luck yet. If i had the money, I would buy one. So far ive got sheet metal in mind along with paint. But like you mentioned, trying to find the proper amount of clearance for the shield is no walk in the park. Pretty much has to be perfect. But thanks, and those look bad ass in the GTO and the SS...

Actually, there is a picture of the RAISS heat shield floating around here with most of the measurements on it. I asked if someone who had one could confirm them and make sure that they were correct and add a couple that were missing so that I could have my bro bend me one in metal shop at his school.

found it: http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/MrCadillac_Magnum/Intake/ yes, that is Cory's Photobucket page.
