Good question, I was wondering the same thing. My research states that the heads, other than being Cast Iron as apposed to Aluminum on the Corvette, Camaro and Trans Am, do support modifications but is that with a full Hog treatment or light working.

Let's hope someone answers your question.

Out of interest why are you getting the heads worked on and what's the mileage?

Have you ruled out the common causes for overheating like the thermostat, water pump, radiator or timing etc? Does it overheat all the time, when it's just idling or only when you push it, like up a long hill?

Can't help but smell fish...

Question

yes I ruled out all the common causes and it only runs hot when I pushing it at about 80 mph and let up off the pedal other than that the car runs fine the only changed I didnt do r the hoses (I still have the green ones)

Just checking, I was wondering what led to the thinking that the heads need rebuilt.

I did have a 70's Cutlass that showed no outward signs other than overheating and when I redid the head gasket it solved the problem.

When the car is up to temperature (meaning the thermostat is open), if you squeeze the upper rad hose it should be hard not mushy... that's one method of checking the water pump.

My thoughts are in the direction that it's more likely something like the water pump/clogged rad than a head problem, especially when you say it happens when you let off of the gas, which is when the water pump puts out less. If it was the heads wouldn't it happen when you were pushing it, not after when you let off the gas?

Bleed the system and make sure your fans are working. After that, throw a new stat in it.
