An exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold(s) could cause the noise and
the performance issue.

It is very common for these cars to have exhaust leaks from the exhaust
manifolds. The bolts break or back out. My car had a ticking sound when
it was cold, but the sound would go away when the engine warmed up.

When I switched to headers, I found that both rear bolts on both sides were broken off.
Lucky for me, the headers I bought don't require the use of those bolts.

For whatever reason, GM did not use good quality exhaust manifold bolts
on these cars.

I'd start by doing an inspection of your exhaust system.

If you find that you do have an exhaust leak, there are grade 8 bolt kits
available for your stock manifolds.

If any bolts are broken off, you might get lucky and use an EZ Out to remove it.

If you can't get a broken bolt out, an exhaust shop should be able to help you out.

You may even be luckier, and maybe the bolt fell out

Hope this helps.

I agree that it is most likely an exhaust leak. I had the infamous "ticking sound" before, and it turned out to be a leaking header gasket. I pulled the headers (a serious PAIN with the Hookers), replaced the gaskets and reinstalled. Shazaam! No more ticking noise!

Make sure the hose that goes into the air pump didnt break off in the air pump and is barely hanging on like mine did
